What is an ACL Injury?
An ACL injury is the over-stretching, straining, or tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) located within the knee joint.
ACL injuries often occur during sports and fitness related activities when the athlete stops abruptly or suddenly changes direction. Injury can also occur following a hard collision or by landing awkwardly following a jump. ACL injuries are common is sports such as football, basketball, gymnastics, and skiing.
Symptoms of an ACL injury may include:
- Swelling and bruising of the knee
- Deep pain within the knee
- Restricted movement
- Inability to bear weight
